My essay on lolcat jargon

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

I wrote this essay for speech communication. The topic was “Language.”

Language is a very interesting topic. The way we all communicate to each other is dominated by speech. The English language is a very developed and advanced language. I can communicate any message I want to any other English speaking human. Some instances might be had to explain, but overall the message can be relayed.

I am an avid user of the internet. As more and more people become driven by the internet, you will always have the people that will make fun of it. We all know of the “online jargon” such as “LOL”, or “BRB.” This is simply slang. The way we speak slang person to person is similar, for example is instead of me saying “okay”, I will say “word.” Slang is making its way onto the internet.

Recently I have noticed a lot of people on the internet using a spin off of the English language known as “lolcat.” A website that can be noted is, icanhascheezburger.com that was recently sold for two million dollars. This website simply has users put captions on pictures. However, people will use words such that, that when you pronounce them, they sound like real English. For example, the word “Hi” is typed “Hai,” and also the word “Harder” is typed “Hardr.” These words are spelled differently, yet pronounced the same.

This kind of slang seems like the people using it are in third grade. However how farfetched this jargon is, the owner of the website sold the idea for two million dollars.
